Are You Ready to Move to a New City?

You grew up in this town. You know everything there needs to know, from where to get designer brands on the cheap, which bars have the best nightlife and most importantly, where to get the best poutine after midnight. But something’s different now. You’re not loving this city the same way you used to. Or maybe you’re in a different place in your life and need a change of scenery. Does that mean you’re ready to pack your bags and move to a new city?  There’s only one way to find out!

Here are five signs you’re ready to make the big move:

You’ve done your research. You can’t just get up and go. You need to know about the place you want to move to. In an ideal situation you would have visited this city at least once and know more than just the basic touristy information.  You know about the different neighborhoods in the city, looked into possible employment opportunities and even possible places to live. If you still find yourself daydreaming about this place after conducting your research, you might want to start putting your things in boxes.

Financially possible. Maybe you’re like most twenty somethings right now and simply can’t afford to live in your current city. If you’re struggling to make ends meet month after month, you might want to look into moving to a city where the cost of living isn’t so high. That’s where doing your research comes in – you want to find a city that’s not only affordable but also meets all your other criteria.

Dreams just don’t come true here.  Maybe you have nothing against the current city you live in but maybe the city you hold so near and dear to your heart is holding you back. Maybe your dream job lies elsewhere. If that's the case, your goals are worth fighting for. Take your chances and test your luck somewhere else.

New goals. Life takes us to unexpected places. Maybe you got a new job, got accepted into an incredible masters program or maybe you’re getting married. All these things can greatly shift what you want in life. Maybe your dream job is in the big city, or maybe you want to settle down someplace quieter, where your future children can grow up. Sometimes new goals equals big moves.

Your current city doesn’t excite you anymore. You know just about everything there needs to know about this place. You’re not in love with this city anymore, even the people aren't what they used to be. If this is the case, do a little travelling before making any harsh decisions. Sometimes a good vacation will remind you why you fell in love with your current city in the first place or give you more reason to want to find a new home.

Keep in mind that even if you do decide to move,  things don’t always turn out the way you want them to. Moving might not be the answer to your prayers which is why it’s important to put a lot of thought and planning before taking that big step. But if you’re absolutely done with your current city, take a leap of faith. You never know until you try!
