5 Fashion Myths, Busted!

Thank goodness rules were made to be broken—these trends are too hot to miss out on

Myth: Never white after Labour Day.

Reality: Don’t let the calendar rule your closet any longer! White is such a clean and polished colour that it deserves to be around for the entire year. Consider steering away from a top-to-bottom white outfit during the winter months—although we love all-white on the red carpet, as Kate Hudson and Diane Kruger have recently demonstrated. For daytime casual wear, a white t-shirt, fitted blouse, or jacket looks great year round.

Myth: Don’t wear denim with denim.

Reality: We’re not going to suggest that stonewashed jeans with a matching jacket are acceptable, but you can still double up on your denim as long as you vary the wash. For example, pair a light-wash jacket with white skinny jeans, or a light-wash vest with a pair of dark bottoms.

Myth: Sequins should only be worn after dark.

Reality: Sequins are glamorous for evening, but they can also be worn through the day as long as you do it properly. This shimmering material adds some eye-catching interest when paired with simple basics. Try a sequined mini with an oxford shirt or plain cardigan.

Myth: Short women can’t wear long dresses.

Reality: Why should you miss out on the maxi dress trend just because of your height? This look is way too cute to dismiss, so embrace it instead! Just choose a dress in a light fabric and narrow cut to avoid adding bulk, and wear it with heels to add some height (wedges would be perfect).

Myth: Never wear hosiery with open-toed shoes.

Reality: Grandma may have been on to something when she stepped out in stockings and open-toed shoes. This is actually a timeless look, but keep it simple—black tights with black shoes are always a safe bet. Don’t try this trend with sheer or nude-coloured hose, and never expose reinforced toes.
