Whether it’s a hot shade of lipstick or a hairstyle that’s suddenly everywhere, there are always a few choice beauty looks that reign supreme each season. Ever wonder where these must-have beauty moments originate? Most looks blossom from the catwalk, months before you ever see them on the sidewalk.
Here are our favourite beauty looks from fashion designers’ spring 2010 shows:
Hot Cross Buns
The high bun was another fashion show favourite. (Perhaps Mrs. Beckham’s top-knot last spring influenced the fashion set more than they’d care to admit?) Either way, there are lots of different versions to choose from: Luella adorned billowy updos with cartoonish bows, Lanvin piled hair on top for a messy look, and Marc Jacobs kept his top-knots sleek and twisted.
Punchy Pastels
These aren’t the washed-out watercolours we’ve seen in springs of yore, but bright, sorbet-like shades. Models at Viktor & Rolf were decked out in powder blue and mint green eyeshadows, while Christian Dior’s makeup team applied creamy lavender and robin’s egg hues generously from the lash line right up to the browbone.
Line Dancing
After a winter of plain old cat eyes, bust out of your usual routine with some bold eyeliner. Donna Karan paired thick white liner with bronzed skin “ a perfect look for hot summer nights. Nanette Lepore and Derek Lam both played with the underliner trend, with bright swipes of green and aqua under the lower lashes.
Leave No Lash Behind
Bright makeup not your thing? If you want to accentuate your eyes without risking a colour clash, take inspiration from shows like Lacoste and Erdem by accentuating your bottom lashes with double coats of thick black mascara.
Haute Pink
Toss that tired red lipstick and grab a standout shade of pink. Again, the look should be more party girl than wallflower “ try a bright fuchsia like the girls at Marc Jacobs, or for the more daring, an edgy glittery magenta as seen at Danielle Scutt.
Peachy Keen
If pink’s just not your colour, peach lips are another quick way to take your look into spring. A sheer peach gloss is universally flattering, but we also loved the matte, fawn-coloured take on this trend at Vivienne Tam.
Get Cheeky
Buck the predictable rosy cheeks for spring “ instead, choose a colour with a little more bite. Zac Posen’s models sported a raspberry hue on their cheeks, which can be the perfect complement to a casual updo, like…
The Braidy Bunch
Expect to see braids in every incarnation this year. Some creative versions on the catwalk included backwards fishtail braids at Nicole Farhi, long, messy, side braids at Alexander Wang, and a sleek twisted rope plait at Emanuel Ungaro.
