How to Downsize Your Makeup Collection to the Essentials

Every year, there comes a time to clear the clutter and to purge all the products that are under utilized. I purged a lot of my makeup and beauty products- tossed the stale and narrowed it down to only the basics.

When shelf space is a premium, here are a few of the only items you need to accomplish any look:

Makeup Essentials

Black eyeliner: a pencil liner, liquid, and a black pot liner are always in my cabinet. You never know what type of affect you are in the mood for. But a black eyeliner is a staple for day to night.

Mascara: Lashes, lashes lashes! As they say, eyes are the window to our soul and of course the lashes play a huge part in framing our best feature. Black mascara does wonders to take you from day to night.

Peach blush: A little Nars orgasm or MAC Prism are universally flattering and buildable blush options.

Bronzer: Bronzer is the perfect way to achieve a flawless sunkissed glow and highlighted cheeks. Nars Laguna, Benefit Perfect 10 are all awesome and a perfect balance of shimmer and matte.

Foundation: A medium coverage foundation is all you really need. Mix it with a bit of moisturizer to create a tinted moisturizer for day and buildable coverage for your nights out. Aim to find the perfect shade (one for summer and one for winter). Clarins and Makeup forever have some great options that are buildable from a light to heavy finish.

Concealer: Finding the perfect concealer that can cover dark eye circles and pimples is not an easy feat, but MAC select cover-up and Makeup Forever Full cover concealer are great liquid concealers that are great for all over coverage. Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage is also a multitasking concealer duo that can cover all blemishes and dark circles.

Highlighter:  Glowing skin needs a little help sometimes. A luminescent complexion enhanced is just what the cheekbones need. Benefit High Beam and Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat are versatile products that brighten and complete the look.

Eye shadow: Regardless of your complexion, opt for a neutral palette- Urban Decay’s Naked is the perfect balance of shimmer and matte.

Eye shadow primer: A good base is the necessary first step to the perfect face. Therefore, I never skip my first step-applying Laura Mercier Eyeshadow Primer or Urban Decay Primer Potion before my shadow and liner. Keeps my eyes from melting down throughout the day.

Hydrating spray: Instead of over compensating with loose powder or applying more foundation mid day to combat shine or dry skin, opt for a hydrating spray. Mac Fix+ and Caudalie Beauty Elixir are a great way to set foundation and to keep your skin from looking too cakey.

Lipstick/Balm: Depending on your mood, you should stock up on a spectrum of lipsticks from red to nude as well as gloss and lip balm. This is one area in my beauty cabinet that I had a hard time narrowing down. Lipstick is the easiest way to change your look so keep things fun and fresh and mix things up for a different look each time.
